Did you know.... According to RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network)... -One in 9 girls and 1 in 20 boys under the age of 18 experience sexual abuse or assault. -82% of all victims under 18 are female. -Females ages 16-19 are 4 times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault. SHHS wants to help STOP this cycle! We have partnered with Got Your Back Defense to offer a GIRLS ONLY Self-Defense Class. Registration is open to the first 30 girls to join! All you need is a bottle of water. Class will begin Session #3 of the AfterSchool Academy and will be held on Thursdays. Click the link below to register! https://forms.office.com/r/emGPGbvaMv

Spotlighting accomplished African American educators in Worcester County was not only an opportunity to celebrate their achievements but also a chance to acknowledge the invaluable contributions they've made to education and their communities. By showcasing their stories, we honored their dedication, perseverance, and commitment to empowering students of all backgrounds. Their experiences and words of inspiration serve as guiding lights, showing that with determination, hard work, and belief in oneself, anything is possible. As our last honoree, today we celebrate Dr. Lavonya Dashiell. Dr. Dashiell has been an educator for 24 years as a first-grade teacher, third grade teacher, Curriculum Resource Teacher, and currently, Assistant Principal at SHMS. Lavonya obtained her bachelor's degree from Salisbury University and both a Masters and Doctorate degree from Wilmington University. "I was inspired to be a teacher as young child after I read the autobiography of Mary McCleod Bethune, an educator and civil rights activist. She opened a private school for African Americans which was a very bold move for her time. I have always wanted to see people succeed, especially when they become solid readers. My advice to any young person would be to read and take every opportunity to learn as much as you can. There is power in knowledge. Once you learn something, no one can take it from you."
